Help people - and have the support I need to do an excellent job helping people.
Helping people includes helping large numbers - as many as possible -
as quickly as possible. As soon as the appropriate technology is
available in a form that can be useful to people - I'd like to see the
technology applied to help the largest number of people possible.
Having the support I need to do an excellent job helping people means having:
- Full-time customer service people to answer the phone with a
caring voice and relentless follow through on issues customers want
resolved.
- Team members who are brilliant, reasonable, and reliable.
Being
paid reasonably to support a safe and nurturing lifestyle is a given.
My team members need everything necessary for them to do a fine job
without distraction.
- Ability to engage technical experts as needed - again the
REASONABLE, down-to-earth experts. Have them look at what we are doing
in the small niche area of their super-expertise and comment / advise
on optimization / direction. For example, a postgresql expert, or a DNS
expert, or a server farm maintenance expert, or Twisted Python
principals, or sponsor the author of an open source program we use make
a modification.
- Equipment and data center locations to do an excellent job for
the people we help. As I've conceived it - better to have redundant
machines than redundant components in higher end machines. We should be
able to pull out any server that performs any function to upgrade,
repair or replace it - with no downtime to customers because there is
another machine which is doing the same function.
- Effective ways for the people we want to help - to hear about
what we have available and get it. IE, PR / marketing / distribution /
customer service. Down to earth marketing, sans BS, measurable ROI for
advertising $ spent, no pie-in-the-sky campaigns. Support for
word-of-mouth from our customers to more people we can help.
- Assured basic support for myself and team members for a safe
and nurturing lifestyle, allowing us to focus exclusively on taking the
best care of this idea, getting the technology and customer service
right, and so doing an excellent job helping people. IE, not a life
where 3/4's of the time is spent on "one on one" consulting
projects where only one person at a time benefits, not going to the
doctor due to no health insurance, giving up taking another step toward
doing something great for
the world today because the brakes on the car need fixing.
